Abstract
An exploratory qualitative research process is presented about the social representation that rural youth have about a gender-neutral bathroom that is intended to be opened in their high school. This proposal is recognized as a function of the debates for the construction of non-violent scenarios oriented to the inclusion of young people in sexual dissidence, recognizing, in addition, their rural youth condition. The information was obtained through semi-structured interviews with some young people to gather their perception of this phenomenon; subsequently, a focus group was convened to recover their social representation on the “gender-neutral bathroom”; which was found to be related to a tension between the conservatism they associate with their rural environment, while recognizing the need to meet the specific needs of the educational community, in relation to providing comfortable spaces, free of violence and accompanied by comprehensive sex education; which would be achieved if youth participation in these processes is encouraged.Downloads
